I was surprised about how much there was in the public press about this. There
was a lot for DeForest Kelly too.

He was at a small Star Trek convention here in Portland once and there was point
where it was Doohan and just a few of us, so I told him how much I liked his movie
Pretty Maids in A Row. He smiled and said, "So you're one of the three people who
saw that movie." Both He and Anthony Ainley (The Master) were two of the coolest
people, down to earth
people; not snotty like a lot of celebrities.

I think part of it is that he was not just a great actor, but a great man in
general. Just take a look at all the great things people who have met him
are saying. Being a good actor is one thing, but being a good person,
espically to your fans (which, not all actors are) is quite another. James
was all of it, and more. As was DeForest Kelly, IMHO.

Honestly, I don't find it that surprising. Scotty (and Bones) really are
icons of pop culture. (Maybe not as much as Kirk or Spock, but still...)

I think the average person on the street would know who Scotty was, even if
they didn't watch "Star Trek" on a regular basis, so the level of press
attention seems fitting.
