What was your favorite playtoy as a child? Was it something storebought with
predefined play parameters? Or was it something of your own imagination? Mine
was an old hatchet. Worn, dull on dull, no handle. But that thing could be
anything I wanted it to be, and oh could it move dirt.
I read an old "guessing what was under Harper's pillow" post at A-Fans that
caused me to think of my hatchet and of what Harper may have kept under his
pillow. Kicker by Mark at A-Fans, embellishment by me.
It's Harper's treasure. A little piece of junk Harper found in his early
childhood and was fascinated by. It was his favorite playtoy and is most
likely what inspired him become an engineer. It's something he became very
attached to and it is the one piece of home he still has with him after all
he's been through over the years.
Beka warned Dylan about letting Harper show it because if Harper gets started
talking about it he goes on and on and on. Stories about his childhood,
possibilities the object suggested to his imagination, etc. All very boring
from Beka's point of view.
The kicker. Down the road Harper's keepsake turns out to be the last piece
needed to assemble the puzzle of the Engine of Creation.
